  1. Pull rope upward to bring valve stem assembly through opening of shell to position anti-extrusion ring shoulder inside opening of shell.
  2. Install “O” ring seal on plate (gas end) over rope and valve stem, install in opening of shell.
  3. Holding bladder puller, pass plate (gas end) over rope and valve stem, and install in opening of shell.
  4. Pass locknut (gas end) over the rope, install
on valve stem and tighten securely.
  5. Remove bladder puller and 1/8" NPT pipe plug and install pressure gauge and needle valve on valve stem. Use Teflon tape on 1/ 8" NPT threads to ensure sealing.
  6. Precharge to required pressure with dry nitrogen. (See precharging section in this manual.)
  7. Remove charging hose. Carefully test gas valve, needle valve and pressure gauge for leakage by using a soapy water solution.
  8. Replace and tighten gas valve cap to extreme finger tightness.
  9. Check and tighten locknut, if necessary.
  10. Install valve guard using four socket head
    cap screws
  11. Surge suppressor is now ready for service.

Gas Valve Instructions

  1. Gas valve installation: Apply light coating of lubricant to sealing “O” ring. Tighten 3/ 4 Hex. body against top surface of valve stem to 100-110 inch-pounds to torque. Never loosen body assembly to discharge gas pressure.
  2. To open gas valve: Remove gas valve cap (Using suitable wrench, hold 3/4" Hex. body
from turning and with wrench turn 3/4" Hex. top swivel nut (left hand) counter clockwise approximately three turns to open valve.
  3. To close gas valve: Tighten 3/4" Hex. top swivel nut (right hand) clockwise to 50-70 inch-pounds of torque. Replace and tighten gas valve cap to extreme finger tightness.

Gauging Head Assembly

Consists of air chuck, bleeder valve and gas charging (tank) valve mounted into an adapter and attached as one unit directly to the gas valve assembly of surge suppressors. When attached to any size surge suppressor, the gauging head assembly enables gas precharge to be checked, increased or decreased. Readings of surge suppressor operating pressure can also be taken using the gauging head assembly.

Charging Hose Assembly

Furnished to connect the gauging head assembly to gas cylinders in order to increase precharge to proper pressure. It consists of a length of hose, attached to a swivel connector on one end and a gland nut assembly on the other. Also required is a pressure gauge of the appropriate range: 0-100 PSI; 0-300 PSI; 0- 600 PSI

Operation

Note A — Precharge: To read or adjust gas pressure of ”precharge” pressure, liquid must be drained from fluid side of surge suppressor to zero hydraulic pressure.
Note B — Operating Pressure: To read hydraulic pressure or “operating” pressure, do not drain fluid from surge suppressor. Read hydraulic pressure while unit is in normal operation.

Installation

  1. Remove valve guard and valve cap from surge suppressor. See Notes A & B before proceeding.
  2. (For units up to and including 10 gallons) To mount the gauging head, mount swivel of air chuck on surge suppressor’s gas valve stem, compressing gasket in swivel to prevent gas leakage. Using two wrenches, keep the bottom nut of the gas valve stationary and rotate the top nut of the valve in a counterclockwise direction, opening the gas valve.
